Most of a washing machine's scrap value is in its motor, which is wound with copper or aluminium wire. The body is thin steel sheet and plastic.
Front loaders: heavy for a reason
A front-load machine can weigh 60–70 kg, but a good part of that is a concrete counterweight bolted inside to stop it walking across the floor during spin. Concrete has no scrap value. That's why front loaders are priced per piece, not by total weight, and why we explain the price instead of just quoting a number.
Stainless steel drums
Front loaders and many top loaders have a stainless steel inner drum, which is worth more than ordinary steel. Semi-automatics usually have plastic tubs.
Copper or aluminium motor
Older and heavier motors are usually copper-wound. Some newer budget machines use aluminium windings, which pay less. Semi-automatics have two motors, which helps.
Getting it ready
- Drain any water left in the drum or pump. Tilting it forward helps.
- Disconnect the inlet hose and close the tap.
- Photograph the model sticker (usually on the back or inside the door).
Things that lower the price
- Removing the motor before we see the machine. We price complete machines better.
Common questions
Why is my front loader worth less than its weight suggests?
Because of the concrete counterweight inside. It can be a large share of the machine's weight and has no scrap value.
Is a semi-automatic worth less than a fully automatic?
Not always. Semi-automatics have two motors, so they can price close to a top loader.
Will you take the stand and trolley too?
Yes. Steel stands are weighed as steel scrap.
