A fridge feels heavy, but most of that weight is the steel body, the plastic inner liner and the foam insulation packed between them. The foam and plastic have almost no scrap value. What pays is the compressor, the black dome at the bottom back, which holds copper windings inside a steel shell.
1. Compressor present or missing
A fridge whose compressor has been removed is worth a fraction of one that's complete. If a mechanic has worked on it, let us know.
2. Size and doors
Bigger fridges have more steel and a larger compressor. Double-door and frost-free models also have more copper and aluminium tubing inside.
3. The coil at the back
Older fridges have a black grid (the condenser) on the back. Newer ones hide it inside the side walls. Either way it's steel or copper tubing, and it's weighed with the body.
Glass shelves and plastic trays
These have no scrap value, so keep them if they're useful, or give them to us and we'll dispose of them.
Getting it ready
- Unplug it a day before and leave the door open so it defrosts and dries.
- Empty it completely, including the freezer and the drip tray.
- Tell us the floor, and whether there's a lift that fits it.
Things that lower the price
- Cutting out the compressor or the pipes yourself
- Puncturing the back panel (the gas lines run through it)

Do you carry the fridge down from upper floors?
Yes. Tell us the floor and whether there's a lift, so we bring enough people.
My fridge still works. Should I sell it as scrap?
If it cools well, a second-hand buyer will usually pay more than the scrap value. We'll tell you if we think that's the case.
Do you buy fridges without a compressor?
Yes, as steel scrap, at a much lower price. Mention it in your message so the range is accurate.
